How to crop a video on iPhone with iMovie

There are many reasons you might want to crop your videos. Perhaps you want to zoom in on a particular aspect of the video, or you want to get rid of your thumb in the corner of the screen.

To crop a video on your iPhone, you’ll need iMovie, which is preinstalled on most iPhones. If for some reason your phone does not have iMovie, you can download it for free from the App Store.

Using this method will not change the size or aspect ratio of your video. It will simply zoom in on your video and perhaps crop unnecessary objects out of the frame.

Follow these instructions to use the crop/zoom feature in iMovie:

  1. Open the iMovie app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to Projects.
  3. Tap on the large plus sign.
  4. Select Movie.
  5. Navigate to and select the video that you want to crop, and then tap Create Movie at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Your screen will be divided into three sections. Tap on the timeline section in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.
  7. Tap on the small magnifying glass in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  8. You will now be able to use your thumb and forefinger to zoom in or out on your video.
  9. To preview the video, press the play button.
  10. When you’re happy with the results, tap Done in the top left corner.

Videos added to your Instagram feed should be no longer than 60 seconds and can be square, portrait, or landscape. If you do choose portrait or landscape layout for your Instagram Feed, remember that your video will look cropped on your profile grid, but will play normally. There are at least 3 ways to do it:
The most common way is to go up to the View menu and deselect (uncheck) Show Clip Volume Levels. Then place your cursor on the right or left edge of a clip. The cursor will morph into an indicator with a little arrow on it. Pressing on your mouse button, drag the indicator left or right to shorten the clip, or to lengthen it if it has already been shortened or split. This is called trimming.
Another way is to place the play head at the point in the clip where you want to split it, and then select Split Video Clip at Playhead from the Edit menu.
Finally, you can use the little slider triangles located under and to the left of your screen, to mark in yellow an area on your time line that you want to Cut or Crop (from the Edit menu).
Just experiment with a test project until you get the hang of it.
As a footnote, iMovie 6 has nondestructive editing. Nothing is really lost. So, if you find that you have trimmed or split off too much of a clip, you can always place your cursor on the edge and drag the edge to make the clip larger again (after turning off Show Clip Volume Levels from the View menu). You also can select Undo from the Edit menu.
