If someone can read your root-owned files, I'd say that's a pretty big security problem for you.

Hi Steve,
The serial number that you are referring to is not the same as the one I originally posted. Your serial number is for the Mac hardware. The serial number I mention is to do with the Mac OS X Server Software serial key.

If you lost access to your serial number because of an MLB replacement, this won't work. Tried it and it returned - No such file or directory

Ditto on that last comment, same here. Apple replaced my Main Logic Board (MLB) and no serial number.

I know it's a grave dig, but anyway.
Just tried this on 10.6.4, and works fine. :) Very handy tip for those who've lost the blue-top cards in the packaging, since Server Admin hides the last 4 characters.
If it works on Tiger and Snow, I'd figure it'd be a sure bet for Leopard as well.

Use About This Mac

From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. You'll see an overview of your Mac, including its model name and serial number.

• Look for a serial number or model name on the outside of your Mac, or on its original packaging, receipt, or invoice.
• Or sign in to appleid.apple.com, then look for your Mac in the Devices section. If you see your Mac there, click its name to see the model name and serial number.
